As my beautiful daughter continued to grow and flourish, relatives began to question when we would baptize her, as was the tradition in my Catholic upbringing. My husband and I are not members of any church. We were not comfortable with pursuing the traditional sacrament of baptism when it did not align with our own beliefs and practice.
The closest thing to a religious experience I had of late would have to be sweating out a slow flow to the beat of my own breath with classic rock jams blasting in Chrispy’s Vinyasa class or chanting Japji at a very (un)godly hour. Nonetheless, we recognized the desire to mark our little one’s infinite presence into this finite world in our own way and I knew just the right person to help – Chrispy Bhagat Singh. We met over afternoon drinks to get to know each other a little better and bounced off ideas about a special ceremony in the privacy of our own home. A few meeting and messages later and we had a plan. We gathered together at our home, our daughter dressed in all white, looking like an angel. Chrispy officiated a ceremony that was unique and special. Our family and friends offered prayers and blessings for our baby. Chrispy surprised us by bringing a vial of water collected during a harvest moon rainstorm from a few years back. The room went silent as he touched the water to Mia’s forehead, blessing her in Latin as she stared back at him, mesmerized. It was a truly special moment that I will never forget. Thank you, Chrispy, for helping us create a beautiful blessing for our daughter. Not just the ceremony, but the spiritual conversation and shaping of the event were wonderful experiences that I will remember as I continue to grow as a mother. |
